Speech and Language in Care Settings – Supporting Eating and Drinking
This badge is awarded to those can demonstrate an understanding of the difficulties people in care settings can have with eating, drinking and swallowing and how you can help to make mealtimes safer for care users.
A high proportion of people in care settings have some difficulty eating, drinking and swallowing. This training will help you:
- understand how the swallow works
- know how to provide a good mealtime environment for the people in your care
- enable people to eat and drink as well as they can
- improve people’s health and wellbeing by helping them enjoy their meals and by reducing the likelihood of malnutrition or chest infections.
- Watch the following video from 4 minutes to 25 minutes – Supporting people with eating, drinking and swallowing using the Manual for Mealtimes.
- Read the following document – Manual for mealtimes excerpt.
- Tell us three things that stood out to you in the learning materials and how you will apply the learning to your practice (150 words).
- Discuss what you have learned with someone (e.g. line manager or colleague) and make a short note of this discussion. (50 words minimum).
Your application will be returned to you with a request for further evidence if it does not meet all the above criteria or if it is not clear which of these questions you are answering within your evidence.
This badge does not require you to hold any other badges however you may find it useful to complete Getting started with Open Badges & Writing Evidence for Open Badges if you are new to Open Badges.
You will need to submit a written statement, in response to the questions asked in the criteria. You can write your statement directly on the badge application form or paste a link to your own blog or portfolio.
We will also accept an audio or video submission if you prefer.
The evidence you submit will be viewable by anyone who you show your badge to. Do not include confidential or private information within your submission.
