This Open Badge is awarded to those who have completed the Dental Trauma: A guide to the risks, prevention and management module. The aim of this module is to introduce preventive advice and first aid care than can reduce avoidable dental injuries and improve outcomes in event of injury occurring. The module is aimed at anyone working within health, social care, teaching or sports organisations.
NHS Education for Scotland’s vision is to lead through sustainable educational solutions and working collaboratively with key partners to reduce inequalities and improve oral health for priority groups.

To achieve this badge, you must:
- complete the Dental Trauma : A guide to the risks, prevention and management | Turas | Learn module on TURAS
- explain your understanding of the risks, prevention of and management of dental trauma (100-200 words)
- describe how you will use what you have learned in your day-to-day practice to improve outcomes for the people you support (200-400 words)
- share what you have learned with others and tell us about how and when you did this (25-50 words).
The total word count for your evidence submission should not exceed 650 words.
Your application will be returned to you with a request for further evidence if it does not meet all the above criteria or is unclear which of these questions you are answering within your evidence.
There are no prerequisites for this badge.
You need to write between 325 and 650 words answering the questions in the criteria. You can write directly on the badge application form or share a link to your own blog or portfolio.
When writing your answers, think about:
Your understanding of dental trauma (100-200 words)
- What the most common risk factors for dental injuries are.
- What is appropriate preventative advice to avoid dental injuries.
How you will use this learning in practice (200-400 words)
- Identify and explain the risk factors for people you support.
- Describe the types of dental injuries you might encounter in your role.
- The first aid procedures you will follow following traumatic dental injury.
- What relevant health promotional material you will use to inform and empower people in your care.
Sharing your learning with others (25-50 words)
- How you shared what you learned.
- When you did this.
Remember: The evidence you submit will be viewable by anyone you show your badge to. Don’t include private or confidential information.
