SCMA Childminders: Working with Families
This Open Badge is for Childminders who aim to expand their knowledge base and improve their childminding practice by demonstrating their understanding of a range of issues which would help address the needs of children who are ‘vulnerable’ and require some additional support.
Completing this Open Badge will help to increase participants confidence in their ability to work with a diverse range of children, with a variety of needs.
Working with Families is for anyone who is involved in providing Early Learning and Childcare for young children.
Childminders should be able to:
- Expand their knowledge base and be more confident in supporting a range of children in their care.
- Understand the importance of positive relationships with families.
- Support families facing complex needs and work in partnership to develop professional relationships with other agencies.
To apply for the badge, you must write a statement of no more than 200 words which meets the criteria for the badge. Your statement must fully cover the following:
- Tell us what you understand about supporting a range of children with a variety of needs in your care?
- Tell us the importance of demonstrating positive relationships with families in your childminding setting?
- Tell us how you will work in partnership with other professionals to support children?
- Tell us, using examples, how you will develop and improve your service through self-reflection and practice change.
You must have attended a SCMA Working with Families course or the 4 session Community Childminding course.
To earn this badge you will need to:
Complete the SCMA Working with Families CPL course and tell us the following:
- Tell us what you understand about supporting a range of children with a variety of needs in your care?
- Tell us the importance of demonstrating positive relationships with families in your childminding setting?
- Tell us how you will work in partnership with other professionals to support children?
- Tell us, using examples, how you will develop and improve your service through self-reflection and practice change.

The Scottish Childminding Association (SCMA) is the only organisation dedicated to supporting childminders in Scotland. Our aim is to promote childminding as a quality childcare service. We do this in part by helping SCMA childminders to be the best they can be.
